This striking Tokoname-yaki teapot is signed by Koji Iwase, a master who has been combining traditional Tokoname techniques with a modern, clear design expression for decades. Born in 1946, Iwase began his ceramic journey in 1962 at Takasuke Pottery Studio, and during his career he won a number of prestigious awards — among them five Gold and four Silver Design Awards at Tokoname. In 1994, he was officially certified as a traditional craftsman of Tokoname ceramics.
This teapot is made from the iconic Tokoname shudei (朱泥) clay, known for its rich red color and ability to soften the tartness of green teas. The surface is adorned with a dramatic yōhen (窯変) gradient — a natural color change produced during firing, which goes from intense red to deep deep black.
A special feature of this model is the sujihiki finish: an unpolished, slightly rough surface that emphasizes the natural texture of the clay and gives the teapot a strong, authentic character. The tall, elegant form further highlights Iwase’s signature style — a blend of tradition, functionality and contemporary aesthetics.
This 260ml kyusu is ideal for Japanese green tea lovers who want a teapot with personality, history and superior functionality.
